air conditioning

Twisted Automotive has re-designed its centre console to incorporate rear seat air conditioning – for the first time in a Land Rover Defender.

With innovation at its heart, the business, based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, specialises in re-engineering the Defender to be the very best vehicle it can be.

Following several enquiries in late 2018, the Twisted team began work to redesign the centre console to accommodate rear seat air conditioning. The first builds to incorporate the new system have recently headed east to the UAE, with the console integrating fully with the automatic conversion.

Creating the system took around 600 hours and required a total remake of the air con piping for the Defender. While functionality was a major consideration, it was also vital that the new console provided maximum space and comfort while remaining in keeping with the lines of the Defender.

The new unit sits as a stand-alone air conditioning condenser and blower that is linked to the front system, ensuring a significant amount of cool air is blown into the rear. The design enables the automatic shifter to move further forward, improving driver comfort.

Prices for the new system start at £4,500 + VAT. Twisted can also fit the newly designed centre console without an air conditioning option, while work is ongoing to create a rear heating system for customers living in cooler climates. For more, go to

Twisted Automotive managing director Charles Fawcett said: “We’ve developed what we feel is a very smart looking, practical and usable centre console fit for a 90 or 110, that for the first time in a Defender gives great air conditioning to the rear seats. In terms of passenger comfort, this will make a tremendous difference to our customers living in warm climates.”

Visitors to the Twisted stand at Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 4-7) can check out how the new system looks in the V8 which will be present at the show. Alternatively, the console will be fitted to a number of Defender vehicles on show at the Twisted Open Day on July 27th at the Thirsk headquarters.
