Even though Facebook remains the most used social media platform, this year we have seen the total number of users decline and the platform struggle to attract younger audiences. This decline is a first for the social media platform that has experienced seemingly never-ending growth since it debuted 17 years ago.

With apps like BeReal rising to 10 million daily active users, Instagram introducing lots of new updates (and often facing backlash) and TikTok continuing to grow, it can be difficult to decide which platforms to include in your social media marketing.

These changes mean businesses need to revisit their social media strategies and consider how these new and upcoming platforms that are taking the social media world by storm, may fit into their communications.

Let’s look at four of the platforms that are taking the digital world by storm:

  • TikTok

In 2021 TikTok was the most downloaded app with around 700 million downloads and unsurprisingly, in 2022, it takes the crown of the fastest growing social media channel.

By the end of 2021, kids and teens were watching an average of 91 minutes of TikTok per day compared with just 56 minutes per day spent watching YouTube.

According to the latest data on time spent on social media, US adults are spending the most time on TikTok. On average, they spend 45.8 minutes a day on the platform. And with most videos being under a minute long, that is a lot of consumed content!

A whopping 92.4% of all TikTok users are aged 13 to 34, painting a clear picture of TikTok’s appeal to teens and young adults, however, it is experiencing growth among older age demographics too. Given its reach and influence, arming yourself with key TikTok user statistics is key to creating an effective social media strategy on the platform and deciding whether it’s right for your business

  • Bereal

BeReal is a social media app that launched in 2020 and has rapidly grown in 2022. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a social media platform that notifies all users simultaneously, at a random time every day. It gives you just two minutes to stop and take a picture using both the front and back cameras. Once you’ve posted, you can scroll through all your friends’ posts and see what they’re up to.

The app operates on a no filter policy and provides an unedited glimpse of your friend’s life.

What makes BeReal unique is its simplicity and originality, and finally giving in to what the public needs – a modest way of sharing photos with friends – be it travelling, café hopping, or even reading a book.

It’s definitely a platform to watch!

  • Reddit

The site is a collation of forums on every possible topic, where users can share content. The most impressive factor of Reddit is that 99.98% of its traffic is organic, which proves just how popular the site is.

Reddit isn’t exactly a new platform, but it has grown massively in recent years and is currently the sixth most visited site in the United States, which means more people visit Reddit than they do Netflix, eBay, Instagram or Twitter!

But despite being one of the most-visited websites in the world it’s still overlooked by many brands and marketers.

  • Twitch

If you haven’t heard of Twitch, it is a dedicated video streaming platform where influencers around the globe stream live content – usually playing a video game or relaying epic reactions from thrilling football matches.

The platform is currently the largest live streaming service for individuals and has 140 million monthly active users. This year, around 567 billion minutes of content have been viewed on Twitch so far!

Influencer marketing and Twitch can go hand in hand to capture and boost a product’s visibility among the masses. The streaming platform has been successful in attracting brands to invest a huge chunk of their money on Twitch by collaborating with an array of influencers to promote their businesses.

Audiences on Twitch seem to passionately follow their content creators which provides the perfect environment for organisations to curate content that resonates with their viewers.
